THE GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT OF ASSEMBLIES OF GOD CHURCH EXCOMMUNICATED

altASSEMBLIES of God Church general superintendent Reverend Paul Emeka has been ex-communicated from the ministry and had his pastoral certificate withdrawn  for instituting legal suits and using law enforcement agencies to witch-hunt some of its leaders.

In a dramatic development, the church's General Council meeting decided to dismiss their spiritual leader and replace him with Reverend Chidi Okoroafor. At the 7,000-strong meeting at the church's Evangel Camp, Okpoko in Ebonyi State over the weekend, it was elect Reverend Okafor. three other principal officials and 15 zonal representatives to form the new executive council for the next four years.

Barrister Abuka, the church's legal adviser, said that the dismissal of Reverend Emeka was necessary and had paved the way to institute litigation against him. He added that the former general superintendent was alleged to be making moves with some members to take over the church.

Reverend  Okoroafor said the measures were necessary to remove those whom he described as dissidents bent on frustrating progress in the church. He confirmed that legal action would be taken against Reverend Emeka and others seeking to take over the church through lawsuits.

“We cannot spiritualise legal issues as you can’t just be praying when somebody is taking you to courts. We could no long keep quiet and allow our property taken over or our accounts fraudulently run by them,” Reverend Okoroafor added.

However, Reverend Emeka said that he stood for reconciliation. He added that the church has been embroiled in some crises, during which a former governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria intervened in the matter.

Reverend Emeka said: “By announcing my excommunication from the church, they are trying to instil fear into people, so that they can distance themselves from me. I stand for reconciliation and I have committed no offence."

He added that some people in the church organised an illegal election to remove him from office by force from office to prevent him from completing his four-year tenure in office which started in 2010. According to Reverend Emeka, they are even threatening his life, prompting him to petition the inspector general of police.
